Echinacea refers to several plant species, three of which have medicinal value (Echinacea angustifolia , Echinacea pallida , Echinacea purpurea ). In the American Great Plains, Native Americans used them to relieve respiratory tract infections and snake bites. Today, research recognizes their use as an adjunctive treatment for respiratory and urinary tract infections. They also help prevent colds. This plant contains numerous active ingredients, including large quantities of alkylamides, most of which are isobutylamides or methylbutylamides (a subclassification of alkylamides). Its action directly targets the immune system, reinforcing and stimulating defenses to effectively combat various infections. This plant is commonly recommended for preventing respiratory tract infections and treating the symptoms associated with these diseases. Contraindications: Children prone to otitis: It seems to increase the risk of otitis in children prone to recurrent otitis. Pregnancy and breast-feeding: The European Commission considers it safe to take during pregnancy and breast-feeding, although tests on mice indicate a risk to the fetus during the first trimester. Systemic and autoimmune diseases: The European Commission, ESCOP and WHO advise against its use in autoimmune and systemic diseases such as AIDS and tuberculosis, due to the plant’s possible effect on the immune system. Allergies: It is possible to be allergic to echinacea, which could be linked to allergies to ragweed.
